(파티마 순례를 위한 특별 기도문)

친애하는 성모기사회 여러분 - 구약으로까지 되돌아가는 것조차 옛 전통이지만, 최후의 만찬에서 종도들에 의해 특별한 중요성이 주어진 - 은총의 중요한 이 시대를 위해 우리 자신을 준비하는 것도 옛 전통입니다. 모두 함께 (몇몇은 모이지만 못 오는 신자들은 영적으로 참여함으로써) 파티마에서 이번 8월을 기념하는 기념식은 과장 없이 유일하고도 장엄하다고 표현될 것입니다: 이 날은 파티마 발현 및 성모기사회 100주년입니다!

1917년 8월 19일, 성모님은 3명의 목동을 (그리고 그들을 통하여 우리에게도) 여섯 번에 걸친 사적인 발현으로 따뜻하게 대해 주었습니다. 성모님은 보통 발현 장소와는 동떨어진 발린호스(Valinhos)라고 부르는 한 장소에서 세 아이를 놀라게 하셨는데, 이 장소는 사람들이 많이 찾는 주요 성지와는 반대로 고요함과 묵상을 위한 오늘날 상징적인 장소입니다. 성모님은 슬픈 표정으로 아이들에게 말씀하셨습니다:

“기도하여라. 아주 많이 기도하여라. 죄인들을 위해 희생을 바쳐라. 왜냐하면 저들을 위해 희생을 바치고 기도하는 이들이 없기 때문에 많은 영혼들이 지옥에 가기 때문이란다.” 이 장소에서 우리가 모이게 되는 이 날이 정확히 100주년이 되는 것은 우연일까요? 

 순례의 분위기를 조성하기 위하여 제가 파티마에 관한 제 1권의 내용에서 나오는 몇 가지 생각을 인용할까 합니다:

“기도하여라. 아주 많이 기도하여라.” 똑같은 말을 이렇게 반복하는 것은 파티마에서 또한 유일합니다. 우리는 사랑의 표현이 담긴 이 외침에서 3가지 요소를 구별할 수 있습니다.

첫째: 우리의 눈과 영혼을 뚫는 성모님의 슬픈 눈으로 성모님은 우리 마음에 호소합니다: “나의 사랑하는 아이야, 제발 기도하거라! 기도가 없다면 너는 네 영혼을 구령할 수 없단다. 기도가 없다면 너는 천주님과 일치할 수가 없고 천주님의 성총을 얻을 수 없단다.”

 둘째: 성모님은 요청을 배가(倍加)합니다:“기도하여라. 기도하여라! 사랑하는 아이야, 네 기도로는 충분하지 않단다. 너의 기도를 두 배로 하여라. 양(量)보다는 질(質)로 기도하여라. 온 정성을 다하여 기도를 잘하도록 하여라. 기도할 때, 너의 기도에 전적으로 몰입할 정도로 혼신의 노력을 다 하여라. 또한 나의 성자의 영광을 위해, 나를 위해, 그리고 영혼들의 구령을 모든 것을 다하여라. 많은 노력을 기울이고 나를 기쁘게 한 묵주 기도 1 단은 나태함과 피상적으로 한 묵주 100단 보다 더 낫다.”

셋째: 성모님은 주장하십니다: “기도하여라. 아주 많이 기도 하여라! 나의 성자께서 너희가 ‘항상 기도하라, 쉬지 않고 기도’ 하라 원하심을 알고 있지 않느냐? 너희가 천주님과 끊임없이 일치되어서야만 천주님의 성총이 끊임없이 너희를 꿰뚫을 것이고 성신의 은총을 너희에게 베풀어 주실 수 있단다. 천주님과의 끊임없는 일치는 수년간 이어진 수많은 노력이 있은 후에서야 비로소 특별한 은총이 주어진단다. 그러나 ‘쉬지 않고 항상 기도’하는 이 목적을 이룰 유일한 방법은 너희 기도를 많이 하는 것, 기도를 자주 ‘아주 많이’ 하는 것이란다."  

성모님의 이러한 요청과 발린호스(Valinhos)의 정신에 우리가 응답할 수 있는 최고의 방법은 순례 전에 침묵과 기도의 정신으로 몇 주 동안 노력하는 것입니다. 구체적으로 무슨 뜻인가요? 우리가 계속하여 이 세상의 소음으로부터 의도적으로 우리 자신을 벗어나게 하여, 일상생활에서 ‘우리의 발린호스(our Valinhos)’를 찾고, 천주님과 성모님과 함께 고요 속에서 시간을 보내는 것입니다. 천주님 앞에서의 침묵의 이 시간은 그 날을 통하여 우리 기도생활의 휴식을 이루는 샘과 원천이 될 것입니다.

 쉬지 않고 기도를 실천하는 한 가지 드러난 수단은 – 그날 여러 가지 일상생활 가운데조차 – 어떤 간절한 기도, “예수, 마리아여 나 당신을 사랑하오니, 영혼들을 구하소서.” 라는 화살기구(祈求)의 쉼 없는 반복입니다. 이 기도는 예수와 마리아에 대한 사랑에다가 영혼을 위한 사랑을 덧붙이고, 또한 우리가 사랑의 계명을 이중으로 실천하고 그리하여 성장하게끔 도와주는 것입니다. 더욱이 이 기도는 파티마의 정신에 완전히 일치합니다:

1 . “천주님을 위로하라” “예수, 마리아여 당신을 사랑하나이다.“라고 충실하게 기도함으로써, ”지극히 슬퍼하시는 천주님“을 우리가 위로합니다. 일생동안 자신의 인생목적을 알았던 거룩한 프란치스코 성인과 우리 자신을 일치시킬 수 있습니다. 성모님이 우리에게 보여주신바 성모님은 슬퍼하시며 우리 시대의 죄의 홍수로 인하여 성모님과 천주님이 우리의 위안을 몹시 원하심을 우리가 기억하게 함은 분명히 발린호스(Valinhos)에서입니다.

 2. “불쌍한 죄인들을 위하여” 이것은 파티마의 두 번째 요청인데, 성모님께서 특히 자신을 헌신한 거룩한 야친타에게 요청한 것입니다. 지옥의 환시 가운데 야친타에게 특별히 드러난 죄인들에게 필요한 기도의 필요성은 지독할 정도로 그녀에게 고통을 주었고, 그리하여 야친타는 남은 여생 동안 오로지 그들을 위하여 기도하고 희생을 바치겠다고 생각했습니다. 우리는 매일 수많은 영혼들을 만납니다. - 그들에게 ‘영혼구령’을 보내줄 좋은 기회인데 그들을 위해 기도해야합니다. 이것이 우리 일상생활 속에서 이 간절한 화살 기구(祈求)가 영혼 구령의 필요성과 저들을 위한 기도의 사명을 지속적으로 생각나게끔 해주는 방법인 것입니다.

만약 우리가 이러한 정신으로 다음 몇 주간 보다 더 충실하게 준비한다면, 우리는 분명히 성모님께 큰 기쁨을 드리는 것이고, 파티마에서 성모님을 만나러 가기 위해 잘 준비가 될 것입니다.

아울러, 8월 13일부터 19일까지 함께 "성모님께 드리는 9일 기도(novena)"기도하길 요청하는 바입니다. 이 기도는 성전(聖傳 - 전통)에 헌신한 어느 아일랜드 수도원에 의해 마련한 이 기념일을 위해 작성된 심오한 기도입니다. (아래) 

2017년 순례기념을 위한 준비기도

오, 티 없으신 동정 마리아여, 지극히 거룩하신 로사리오의 모후이시여, 태양을 입으신 여인이여, 100년 전, 파티마에  방문하시어 당신의 티 없으신 성심과 어머니다움을  모든이들에게 알려 주신이여, 당신께 드리는  우리의 완전한 봉헌을 받아주소서. 우리와 동방과 서방에 있는 가톨릭교회의 모든 자녀들을 위해 성신께서 준비하신 구원의 방주로서 성모님의 티 없으신 안전한 피난처로 우리를 받아주소서. 우리 각자가 금년에 당신의 티 없으신 성심 안에서 끊임없는 기도의 성소(聖所), 지극히 거룩하신 성 삼위와 함께 하는 친밀한 감실, 모든 병약자들의 치유를 위한 병원, 가장 용감하면서도 지극히 충실한 영혼조차도 위협을 하고 있는 혼란 가운데 평화의 항구이신 성모님을 찾게 하소서. 우리가 묵주를 들게끔 영감을 불어주시어 지극히 당신을 사랑하고, 금년에 당신의 하자 없으신 성심께 우리 마음을 다하여 끊임없이 기도하며, 사나 죽으나 봉헌된 우리의 소망의 표현을 다하게 하소서. 우리 마음을 십자가 제대 위에 한 번 제물이 되어 우리 죄를 속량하신, 교회 제대 위에서 우리를 위해 아직도 자신을 제헌하시는, 그리고 숨어 계시고 침묵 가운데 흔히 잊혀진 어린 양에게로 돌리게 하소서. 불쌍한 죄인들을 위해 당신 연민의 위대하고도 강력한 표현, 그리고 해가 뜨고 지는 교회에서, 또한 참으로 온 세상에서 당신의  티 없으신 성심의 승리가 드러나는 금년이 되게 하소서. 모든 저항을, 악마와 인간의 모든 저항을 이겨내어  당신의 모성 안에서 그리고 성모님 태중의 복되신 열매이신 그리스도 예수 얼굴에서 빛을 발하는 성부의 영광 안에서 타오르는 사랑의 불꽃을 모든 영혼들에게 드러나게 하소서. 오, 온화하신 이여. 오, 사랑이여. 오, 감미로우신 동정 마리아여!  (전통을 지키고 있는 한 아일랜드 수도원이 지은 기도문)

Dear Knights of the Immaculata,

It is an old tradition – going back even to the Old Testament, but given a special significance by the Apostles in the cenacle – to befittingly prepare ourselves for important days of grace. The anniversary which we will celebrate this August in Fatima together (for some, at least joined spiritually) may be described as unique and grand without exaggeration: 100 years of Fatima and the MI!

On the 19th of August, 1917, Our Lady favoured the three shepherd children (and through them, us as well) with the most personal of the six apparitions. She surprised the children at a place called Valinhos, away from the usual place of the apparitions - a place symbolic today for its tranquillity and reflection, in contrast to the bustling main shrine. There she spoke to the children with a sad expression on her face: "Pray, pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners; for many souls go to Hell, because there are none to sacrifice themselves and to pray for them.”

Please allow me, in order to set the mood for the pilgrimage, to quote a few thoughts from my book on Fatima, Volume I: “Pray – pray – very much!” This repetition of the same word is also unique in Fatima. We can distinguish three elements in this cry of love.

First: Our Lady with her sad eyes penetrating our eyes and souls, whispers to my heart: “My beloved child, please pray! Without prayer you will not save your soul, without prayer you cannot be united with God and you cannot receive his graces!”

Second: Our Lady doubles her request: “Pray, pray! You don't pray enough, my child! Please double your prayers, not so much in quantity, but in quality. Learn to pray well, with all your heart! Make efforts to be entirely addicted to your prayer, when you pray. And do it all for my Son’s glory, for my honor and the salvation of souls! One Rosary said with much effort and desire to please me is better than 100 said with negligence and superficially.”

Third: Our Lady insists: “Pray, pray very much! You know, that My Son asks you ‘to pray always and never to cease’. Only if you are constantly united with God, the grace of God can constantly penetrate you and the gifts of the Holy Ghost inspire you. But I know, that constant union with God is a special grace given only after many years of constant effort. However, the only way to achieve this goal of ‘pray always and never cease’ is to multiply your prayers, and to do them often and ‘very much’”.

The best way that we can correspond to this call of Our Lady and the spirit of Valinhos is to strive in these few remaining weeks before the pilgrimage for silence and the spirit of prayer. What does that mean concretely? That we constantly remove ourselves deliberately from the noise of this world, find "our Valinhos" in daily life, and spend time in silence with God and Our Lady. This time of silence before God will become the foundation and source of the rest of our prayer life throughout the day.

One proven means to practice unceasing prayer - even amidst the various occupations of the day - is the constant repetition of a certain ejaculatory prayer, like the prayer: "Jesus, Mary, I love thee, save souls". This prayer contains, in addition to the love of Jesus and Mary, the love for sous, and so it helps us to fulfil the double commandment of love and grow therein. Moreover, it corresponds completely to the spirit of Fatima:

1. "console God" By praying sincerely "Jesus, Mary, I love thee" we console "God, who is so sad". We can unite ourselves in this way to holy Francisco, who saw in this his entire life’s purpose. It is precisely in Valinhos that Our Lady shows us that she is sad, and so reminds us how much she and God desire our consolation for the flood of sins in our days.

  2. "the poor sinners" This is the second request of Fatima, to which, especially, holy Jacinta dedicated herself. The necessity of sinners, revealed to her particularly in the vision of hell, distressed her to such an extent that for the rest of her life she thought only of them, prayed for them, and sacrificed herself for them. We encounter so many souls every day – a good opportunity to send them a "save souls" - to pray for them. That’s how this ejaculatory prayer reminds us in our daily lives continually of the need of souls, and of our mission to pray for them.

If we try for the next few weeks to live ever more faithfully in this spirit, we can surely give Our Lady great pleasure, and we will be well-prepared to go to meet her in Fatima.  Also, I'd like to invite you, from the 13th to the 19th of August, to pray a "novena" together; a profound prayer, composed for this anniversary year by an Irish monastery devoted to tradition (see below).

Preparatory Prayer for the Anniversary Pilgrimage 2017

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Woman clothed with the sun, thou who didst visit Fatima one hundred years ago to make known to all men thy maternal and Immaculate Heart, receive our act of total consecration to thee. Welcome us into the safe refuge of thy Immaculate Heart as into the ark of salvation prepared by the Holy Ghost for us and for all the children of the Catholic Church in East and West. Let each one of us find in thy Immaculate Heart this year a sanctuary of ceaseless prayer, a tabernacle of intimacy with the Most Holy Trinity, a hospital for the healing of every infirmity, a harbour of peace in the midst of the confusion that threatens even the bravest and most faithful souls. Inspire us to take up the rosary that thou so lovest, and to make it during this year the ceaseless prayer of our hearts and the expression of our desire to live and to die consecrated to thy Immaculate Heart. Turn our hearts to the Lamb who, once immolated upon the altar of the Cross, offers Himself still for our sakes from the altars of the Church and from the tabernacles where He abides hidden, silent, and so often forsaken. Let this year be for us a great and powerful manifestation of thy compassion for poor sinners and the beginning of the triumph of thy Immaculate Heart in the Church from the rising of the sun to its setting, and indeed in the whole world. Overcoming every resistance, be it of demons or of men, reveal to all souls the flame of love that burns in thy maternal Heart and the glory of the Father that shines on the face of His Christ, Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb.
