Q: Victor Marie Hugo wrote ¡®Les Miserables¡¯. The Church defined this book as Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Why? Because of many corrupted priests at that time? The characters, bishop Myriel and Jean Valjean in this novel are very good. Some people think that the Church usually wants to keep Ancient Regime sustainable.

A: As for Victor Hugo¡¯s novels, he had lost the faith and became involved in spiritism; he became quite anti-Catholic in many ways, and it is not surprising that many of his works were put on the Index (=list of forbidden books). The style may be appealing to some, but the ideas are often twisted by his Godless world-views.

The world (in the bad sense) promotes and distorts history both about the massacre of Saint Bartholomew¡¯s day, and about Victor Hugo. But when one sees the fruits (¡°by their fruits you shall know them¡±), the resulting judgement is quite different. Victor Hugo is part of the anti-God influence at the end of the 19th century, which ended up in the first world war: a punishment by God for all the anticlericalism in France at the end of the 19th century. The God-less people had truly become wild then, and they reaped the fruits with the first world war.
