Q   How to meditate? Do we have to think at all?

A  The simplest way to advise you how to meditate is to refer you to St Ignatius in his ¡°Spiritual Exercises¡±. This is precise the object of his ¡°exercises¡±, to practice meditation and higher forms of prayer. He describes several forms of prayer, with the exercise of the memory, the intelligence, the will; with the ¡°composition of place¡±, a logical approach; with the pondering on the words of the Gospel; with the consideration of all the gifts of God in our life, etc¡¦

Yes, we do have to think! Prayer is an act of the intelligence, teaches St Thomas Aquinas. The Buddhists claim that meditate is an exercise at ¡°NO Thinking¡±: this is the complete opposite of prayer. It hands over the mind to the senses, instead of controlling the senses¡¦ or it hands over the mind to the Devil who manipulates it as he wishes!

There are some little books that help us to pray. For instance St Alphonsus of Liguori has a little book on ¡°visits to the blessed Sacrament¡±. When we think, we do not have to make up new ideas all the time; nothing forbids us to simple MAKE OURS THE IDEAS OF THE SAINTS! Thus meditative reading of such book by Saints is an excellent start-up for prayer.

In order to renew the love of God, I do recommend the meditation of St Ignatius to ask for the love of God, at the end of the Exercises. I also remind that love is not measured by heart-beat: true charity is in the will, it is a union of will with the Will of God: to love God and the neighbour as God loves Himself and our neighbour. The word ¡°as¡± does not mean equality which is impossible, but means conforming ourselves to the Model, imitating that divine model as St Paul says: ¡°Be ye therefore imitators of God, as most dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness¡±(Eph. 5:1-2).

The Rosary: to hold it is good, to pray it is much better! When you say the words of the Rosary, accompany Jesus and Mary on their life¡¯s journey, be with them at Nazareth, Bethlehem, Egypt, in the Temple, on the roads of Galilee, on the way of the Cross, or witnessing the glory of the Risen Christ! And ask them the grace to conform your life to theirs!
