절제와 정결

질문  절제와 정결은 요즈음 배우 찾아보기 힘든 덕행입니다. 아이들에게 어떻게 그런 덕성을 기르게 할 수 있을까요?

답변 그러한 덕행은 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 성총이 필요합니다. 그래서 그러한 덕행은 세속적인 시림들에게서는 실제적으로 찾을 수 없습니다. 오늘날 돌아가는 각본은 세상의 정신이 모든 분야에 침투한 것인데, 심지어 교회 내부까지 그리고 성소(聖所) 안에서도 발견됩니다. 그래서 끔찍이 악한 표양(스캔들)을 목격하게 됩니다.

그러나 우리 주 예수 그리스도는 항상 변함없이 좋으신 분이며 관대하시니 그분에게 돌아오는 모든 이들은 주님의 성총을 받게 될 것입니다. 한 가지 조건이 있는데 간단합니다. 겸손! “천주께서는 교만한 자를 물리치시고, 겸손한 자에게는 성총을 주십니다.”(야고보 4:6)

그 덕행을 ‘더 이상 찾아볼 수 없다’라고 생각해선 안됩니다. 엘리아를 기억해보세요. 그분은 우상숭배자 왕인 에이하브(Achab)와 맞서고 이자벨(Jezabel)이라는 사악한 여왕에게 쫓겨서 사막에 피신하여 천주께 “나는 홀로 남았다”하며 원망했습니다. ”내가 만군의 주 야훼를 위하여 열심히 특심하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주님의 제단을 헐며 주의 선지자들을 죽였으며 오직 나만 홀로 남아 저들이 나의 생명을 취하려 하나이다.“(1Ki 19:14) 천주께서 응답하시길, ”내가 이스라엘 가운데 칠 천명을 남기리니, 그들이 바알 앞에 무릎을 꿇지 아니하였고 손에 입을 맞추지 아니하였느니라.“(1Ki 19:18)

이러한 덕행을 실천하는 위대한 조력자는 복되신 동정 마리아입니다. 성모님께 진정으로 헌신하는 모든 이들은 저런 덕행을 상실할 것입니다. 성모님을 진정으로 사랑하고 저런 덕행을 잃는다는 것은 불가능합니다. 그가 성모님을 사랑한다고 생각한다면, 저런 덕행을 사랑하지 않을 것이고, 자신을 속이는 것이죠! 성모님은 아름다운 모델이며, 순수, 절제, 정결의 모범이자, 놀라운 조력자이면 우리가 죄의 기회를 피하고, 위험에 처한 우리에게 경고를 보내며 충직하게 하는 은총을 얻어줍니다. 

Modesty and Chastity

Q  “Modesty, chastity are rare virtues that cannot be found anymore these days. How to nurture that in a child?”

A   “These virtues require the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, hence they are practically not found in worldly people! The drama today is that the spirit of the world has invaded everything, even often within the Church and even within the sanctuary. Hence one witnesses horrible scandals!
However our Lord Jesus Christ is not less good and generous today than ever: everyone that turns to him will receive His grace. One condition, very simple: humility! “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble”(Jac. 4:6).

We should not think that virtue “cannot be found anymore”. Remember Elias, who stood up against Achab, the idolater king; he was pursued by the wicked queen Jezabel, so ran away in the desert and complained to God: “I am left alone…”: “With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant: they have destroyed thy altars, they have slain thy prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it away” (1Ki 19:14). Yet God answered him: “I will leave me seven thousand men in Israel, whose knees have not been bowed before Baal, and every mouth that hath not worshipped him kissing the hands” (1Ki 19:18).

The GREAT helper in the practice of these virtues is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Everyone who is truly devoted to our Lady will love these virtues; it is impossible to be truly devoted to our Lady and not love these virtues. If one think he loves our Lady, and does not love these virtues, he deceives himself! Our Lady is not only a model – beautiful model – of purity, modesty, chastity, but she is also a marvellous helper, obtaining for us the grace to be faithful, to avoid the occasions of sin, warning us in danger…
