      Baptism for special cases

Q 1  Is it possible for a mentally disable adult to be baptised? I didn¡¯t mean those adult with mental problems, but those who have genetic disease from childhood that causes their mental ability to be much limited than normal adult.

A 1  ¡°Mentally disabled persons are like children : they may be baptised. If they can understand a little, like children, they should be taught correspondingly.

Q 2  If he at least can memorise basic prayers and know who Jesus is, can he be baptised like other adults? The local parish priest  insisted that this person should join the catechism class despite of his condition.

A 2  ¡°It is not right to impose adult catechism class to a person who is mentally like a child! And since such person cannot attend children¡¯s catechism, then he needs personal attention: either the priest himself instructs, or he gives his mother (or you) a proper children¡¯s catechism which your brother should learn and understand (e.g. a first communion catechism: see the new St Joseph First Communion Catechism). Such catechism has the essentials required for baptism (you need not go through all about confession and communion, though it may be good and useful, but you need to go through all until baptism included). Plus he needs to know his prayers: our Father, Hail Mary AND CREED. If he does that, then we could baptise him at QMHR RC.

Q 3  Doesn¡¯t baptism require consent?
A 3 ¡°Consent is required for adult baptism; parents¡¯ consent is sufficient for children¡¯s baptism: the child¡¯s consent is required according to his ability, but is not essential. Indeed as long as a child is a child, his parents have responsibility for his salvation! Parents have given him life¡¦ without his consent; in the same way, parents give a lot of good things to their children without their consent – including corrections! All this is for the benefit of the child.

It is a grave error of modernist to say that parents should wait for the children to consent to their baptism: it deprives the children from many graces! See the marvels that God can do in children¡¯s souls adorned by baptism, such as St Thérèse of the Child Jesus! It is influenced by some Protestants who reject children¡¯s baptism.
