Being Judgemental

Q How should I respond to those who said I¡¯m being judgemental when I pointed out their sins and why such and such should not be done? They would say Christians should be loving, love the sinners hate the sin. And of course I¡¯m not a saint either so who gives me the rights to judge others? Judge not lest you be judged! But if I didn¡¯t say anything in the face of sin, would I be responsible for it also because I kept my silence?

¡°Two of the seven works of spiritual mercy are ¡°to counsel the ignorant, to correct the sinner.¡± Fraternal correction is thus ¡°an act of mercy¡±, true love!

The objection fails by the ambiguity over the word ¡°judgemental¡±: there are many such ambiguous words under which vices hide, and that are very common in the modern world. To judge is wrong when one condemns (without this being his duty: it is not wrong for a ¡°Judge¡± to judge!), without helping the sinner to get out of his sins. It is NOT wrong to judge when the purpose is healing: thus a doctor makes a ¡°diagnostic¡±, i.e. a judgement concerning the sickness of the patient, but that judgement is all in order to heal, and no patient has ever accused a doctor to be ¡°judgemental¡±, though he does judge! The vice that hide under this ambiguous word is the love of sin: many sinners do not want to quit their sins! They resent those who want to help them to open their eyes and stop offending God. Such attitude rejects the mercy of God, which does require penance and change of life¡¦ precisely to a better life! Those who make such accusation do not really ¡°hate sin¡±, otherwise they would be grateful to those who help them out!

Now the very fact that we ourselves are not without sins (at least venial sins now and often mortal in the past) should rather be an encouragement to the sinner to repent: the grace of penance that God has given to one, He can give to another. Penance is possible, and this should be manifest by our own example. Also this should impress on the person who corrects his neighbour that he ought to be humble, not esteeming himself above the others, even though today they may be sinners: because as God has given him grace in the past, so can He give today¡¯s , sinner grace to become even a better Catholic tomorrow!
