Q I began praying for Amelia (of whom Our Lady said at Fatima that she will be in Purgatory until the end of the world) and poor souls in Purgatory. By the way, if the Lord's words or BVM's prediction is unchangeable, is my prayer for Amelia useless?

A Good is really good: therefore prayers are never useless! However God does not always answer our prayer in the way we would like them; but when He does not give what we ask, He gives BETTER. So we should always pray with confidence in Him, in His Goodness. Hence prayers for particular souls in Purgatory would be used by God,

- either for the benefit that soul itself,

- or for another soul (e.g. if the soul for whom we pray is already in Heaven, thus not needing anymore prayers, or if that soul is in Hell, thus without the ability to profit from our prayers, then such prayer would not be wasted: it would benefit to another soul!)

Now more to the point of Amelia, sometimes in the Old Testament God made ¡°conditional predictions¡±, even when the condition was not explicated. Thus God said to Jonah to preach that ¡°Yet forty days, and Ninive shall be destroyed¡± (Jon 3:4). This was apparently unconditional. Yet when the Ninivites did real penance, God forgave them and did not destroy them. There would be quite a few other such examples in the Scriptures.

We do not know for whom it would benefit, and it is better that we do not know: indeed that ignorance keeps us more humble (if we could see the value of sanctifying grace as the souls in Heaven can see it, we would be absolutely amazed at its beauty, and even more at the beauty of the eternal glory God gives to souls: so to know we had help them to obtain it, we could become proud. Hence it is good for us to ignore it, trusting our Lord Jesus Christ¡¯s goodness!)

Yet it is always good to pray: ¡°Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened¡± (Mt. 7:7-8). In Hebrew, the repetition of the same idea is a superlative: e.g. ¡°King of kings¡±, ¡°Virgin of virgins¡±, ¡°amen, amen I say to you¡¦¡± But here we have a TRIPLE repetition: this is absolute truth! So do pray, and pray with confidence¡¦ and humility, leaving to God the wisdom to use your prayers for the best, both for you and for the person for whom you pray, even if it is not exactly what you asked for.
