질투하시는 천주

질문  우리 천주님은 질투하시는 천주이시다 라고 성경에서 읽었습니다. 만약 천주께서 질투하시면 질투는 나쁜 거 아닌가요? 천주님은 질투하실 수 있고 우리는 왜 질투하면 안 되나요?

답변 질투는 우리보다 타인이 더 사랑받는 것을 보게 될 때, 또는 우리가 그렇지 않은데 타인의 형편이 나아지는 것을 볼 때 나오는 슬픈 감정입니다.

 이것은 어떤 선에 대해 우리가 배타적인 권리를 가지고 있을 때를 제외하고는 대체로 잘못된 것입니다. 예를 들어, 오직 남편(아내)를 보는 아내(남편)가 다른 남성(혹은 여성)을 사랑하게 될 때 오직 남편과 아내 사이에서 적절한 방법으로 남편(아내)은 정당하게 질투하는 겁니다. 보통 일반적인 것뿐만 아니라, 모든 인간 사이에 일반적인 애정(다정함)이 있는데, 만약 남편이나 아내가 단순히 타인에게 ‘다정하게’ 대한다 해서 배우자가 질투한다면 잘못된 겁니다. 더욱이 영적인 친교는 심지어 미혼인 사람일지라도 합법적일 수 있습니다. 친교형태가 오직 결혼 안에서만 적절하다는 것은 아닙니다(특히 긴 키스 등 같이 분별 있는 표현일 때). 그러므로 잘못된 질투는 자기 배우자에게 모든 친교를 거부하는 것이고, 질투는 잘못이 아니라, 만약 배우자가 혼인에 걸맞는 독점권을 행사하지 못할 경우에는 심지어 합법적일 수 있다는 겁니다.

 예를 들어 어린 아이가 성장했을 때, 젊은이는 젊은 여성과 결혼하는 것이 정상이고, 따라서 남자의 어머니는 자기 자식에 대한 애정에 대해 질투해서는 안 됩니다. 또한 젊은 여성의 아버지도 그러하지요. 이와 같은 질투는 분명히 잘못된 것입니다. 이와 비슷하게 아내는 자기 남편이 어머니에게 갖는 애정에 질투해서는 안 되고 남편 역시 자신의 아내가 아버지에게 갖는 애정에 질투해선 안 됩니다. 이러한 애정이 자녀들이 부모에 가지는 자연적인 애정이라면 그렇습니다. 물론 죄가 되지 않아요!

 질투가 때때로 시어머니와 며느리 사이에서 가정불화의 원인이 되는 것을 봅니다. 그러나 각자가 자신의 적절한 위치에서 처신할 때, 질투는 절대 일어나지 않습니다. 인간이란 존재가 모든 선을 가지고 있지 못하기 때문에, 고로 인간은 타인에 대한 모든 애정의 권리를 결코 주장할 수 없습니다!

 자, 천주님은 무한한 선이시고, 그리고 모든 사물 위에서 사랑받을 배타적 권리를 가지고 계시니, 왜냐하면 천주님만이 홀로 천주이시기 때문입니다. 천주 이르시되 천주는 질투하시는 천주리고 하십니다. 그러므로 우상숭배를 금하신 후에 천주 말씀하시되,“너희는 그것들을 절하지 말며 섬기지 말라, 나 너희 천주 야훼라. 전능하고 질투하는 자라.”(출애굽20:5) 그러므로 4절이 금하는 것은 분명히 우상을 제작하는 것을 금하는 것이지 조상(彫像)을 만드는 것을 금하는 것이 아닙니다. (왜냐하면 천주께서 친히 언약의 궤위에 게루빔을, 청동 뱀을 만들라 지시했기 때문입니다) 천주님께 유일한 최고의 위치에 드리는 적절한 질서를 우리가 존중한다면, 천주님은 우리가 우리 이웃에 대한 합법적인 애정에 대해 질투하시 않음을 주목하십시오. 그와는 반대로 천주님은 우리더러 서로 사랑하라 명하십니다.

Our God is a Jealous God

    Q I read in the Bible that our God is a jealous God. It seems that jealousy is not a bad thing if God can be jealous. But how can He be jealous and we cannot?

A Jealousy is a kind of sadness when we see others loved more than we are, or getting things we are not getting.

 This is usually wrong, except when we have an EXCLUSIVE RIGHT to some good: for instance, a husband (or a wife) who sees his wife (or her husband) love another man (or another woman) in a manner appropriate only between husband and wife is rightly jealous. Now there is a general affection (affability) that is not only normal but due between all humans, and it would be wrong for a spouse to be jealous if his/her spouse is simply “affable” with others; moreover, spiritual friendship can be legitimate even with persons one is not married with – but not that kind of friendship only appropriate in marriage (especially with its sensible manifestations, such as long kissing, etc.); so jealousy is wrong is one refuses ALL friendship to one’s spouse, but it is not only not wrong, but even it is legitimate if one’s spouse fails to the exclusivity proper to marriage.

 For instance, when children grow up, it is normal for a young man to get married with a young woman, and his mother should not be jealous of his son’s affection, nor a father for his daughter’s: such jealousy would clearly be wrong. Similarly a wife should not be jealous of the affection of her husband for his mother, nor a husband be jealous of the affection of his wife for her father – so long as these affections are the natural affections of children for their parents and not sinful of course!
 
 One can see then that jealousy causes sometimes frictions in families between mother in law and daughter in law, etc. But so long as each one remains at one’s proper place, there must be no jealousy: since one human being does not possess all goodness, one human being can never claim the right to ALL the affection of another!

 
Now God is infinite Goodness, and therefore has an exclusive right to be loved ABOVE ALL THINGS, because God alone is God! Hence God says He is a Jealous God, hence after forbidding to make idols, God explains: “Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous” (Ex. 20:5). (Hence what the verse 4 forbids is clearly the making of idols, not simply statues, since God Himself commanded to make the cherubs over the ark and the brazen serpent). Note that, so long as we respect the proper order that gives to God alone the supreme place, God is not jealous of our legitimate affection for our neighbour: ON THE CONTRARY, He commands us to love one another!
