 교황께서 너무나 많은 도움을 주어서 로마에 있는 랍비는 -이분이  교황 비오 12세께서 유대인들에게 행한 일에 대한 최고의 증인이라는 점은 누구도 부인 못할 겁니다. - 전쟁이 끝난 후 가톨릭으로 개종하였습니다! 그 랍비의 이름은 이스라엘 졸리(Israel Zolli)이며, 에우제니오 세례명으로 성세를 받았습니다. 특히 그는 유대인 공동체를 위해 모든 힘을 다한 비오 12세를 공경했습니다. 이것이야말로 사후(死後) 비오12세를 공격하는, 널리 퍼져 있는 모든 험담에 대한 최고의 반박인 것입니다. ‘새벽이 오기 전’(이냐시오 출판사)이라는 그의 자서전에서 저 랍비의 개종에 관한 이야기를 읽는 것은 전쟁 기간 중 유대인들을 위한 교황 비오 12세의 탁월한 도움에 대한 직접적인 충분한 증언입니다. 비오 12세께서 선종했을 때, 이스라엘 수상도 이러한 탁월한 도움에 대해 헌사를 하였습니다.

          Pope Pius XII Cooperated with the Nazi?

Q Some people say that during the Second World War, Pope Pius XII cooperated with the Nazi. Is that true?

A Pope Pius XII had been the Apostolic nuncio in Germany before being elected to the Sovereign Pontificate. He certainly helped Pope Pius XI write the encyclical “Mit brennender Sorge” (14th March 1937) that condemned all the false principles of Nazism and the abuses of the Nazi government. Its diffusion in Germany required secrecy and it worked: “The large effort to produce and distribute over 300,000 copies of the letter was entirely secret, allowing priests across Germany to read the letter without interference.” However the reaction of the Gestapo was immediate: “The Gestapo raided the churches the next day to confiscate all the copies they could find, and the presses that had printed the letter were closed.”

 

When he became Pope, he did so much to help the Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis, even allowing convents to hide Jews (dispensing from the usually very strict Papal enclosure) and encouraged helping them to go to Catholic countries such as in South America. He also ordered the melting of chalices to help the Roman Jewish community to pay the fines requested by the Nazi… To cite one of the many testimonies, in his April 7, 1944 letter to the Papal Nuncio in Romania, Alexander Shafran, Chief Rabbi of Bucharest, wrote: "It is not easy for us to find the right words to express the warmth and consolation we experienced because of the concern of the Supreme Pontiff, who offered a large sum to relieve the sufferings of deported Jews.... The Jews of Romania will never forget these facts of historic importance".

He did so much that the very Rabbi of Rome – nobody could be a better witness of what Pope Pius XII had done for the Jews! – converted to Catholicism after the war! His name was Israel Zolli, and he took at his Baptism the name Eugenio, precisely in honour of Pope Pius XII, for all he had done for the Jewish community. This is the best refutation of all the calumnies that have been spread after his death against him: if he had failed to his duty, the Rabbi of Rome would not have converted – or at least would not have taken the name Eugenio! To read the conversion story of that Rabbi in his autobiography “Before the dawn” (published by the Ignatius Press) is sufficient proof of a first-hand witness of Pope Pius XII’s outstanding help for the Jews during the war. When Pope Pius XII died, even the head of the State of Israel  paid tribute to this outstanding help.

It is a historical fact that the detractors of Pope Pius XII appeared MUCH AFTER his death. Here I quote Rabbi Dalin: “For Jewish leaders of a previous generation, this harsh portrayal of Pope Pius XII, and the campaign of vilification against him, would have been a source of profound shock and sadness. From the end of World War II until at least five years after his death, Pope Pius enjoyed an enviable reputation amongst Christians and Jews alike. At the end of the war, Pius XII was hailed as "the inspired moral prophet of victory," and "enjoyed near-universal acclaim for aiding European Jews." 

Numerous Jewish leaders, including Albert Einstein, Israeli Prime Ministers Golda Meir and Moshe Sharett, and Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, expressed their public gratitude to Pius XII, praising him as a "righteous gentile," who had saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. In his meticulously researched and comprehensive 1967 book, Three Popes and the Jews, the Israeli historian and diplomat Pinchas Lapide, who had served as the Israeli Counsel General in Milan, and had spoken with many Italian Jewish Holocaust survivors who owed their life to Pius, provided the empirical basis for their gratitude, concluding that Pius XII "was instrumental in saving at least 700,000, but probably as many as 860,000 Jews from certain death at Nazi hands."  To this day, the Lapide volume remains the definitive work, by a Jewish scholar, on the subject.” (by Rabbi David G.
