Q St. Jean Vianney said if we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy. In that case, father, I don't understand the Mass. What is the Mass? Why would I be so joyful about it?

A Supreme happiness is in God; God is supreme beatitude; and His plan for men is precisely to lead them, through His Only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to share His own beatitude in Heaven, by the beatific vision. Now the great obstacle for this is sin. And ¡°God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him¡± (Jn. 3:16-17).

Now this is the Mass! At Mass, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of the Eternal Father comes down and is really present under the appearances of bread and wine, and He offers to His Father the Sacrifice of His Body and Blood for our salvation, the same Sacrifice which He offered on the Cross! The only difference is the mode: the Sacrifice of the Cross was bloody, the Sacrifice of the Mas is the ¡°un-bloody Sacrifice¡±. So there are marvellous reasons to rejoice: the Infinite Good ness Himself, God the Son, comes and is present at Mass; He comes to apply the merits of His Cross for our salvation, so that we may die to sin and live unto God, and thus reach everlasting Joy in Heaven!

¡°O ye of little faith!¡± (Mt. 6:30) ¡°If thou didst know the gift of God!¡± (Jn. 4:10) If we had faith as a grain of mustard seed, then we would really appreciate the gifts of God, the greatest of which is the Mass. We would have the reactions of the Saints, St Jean Marie Vianney, or Padre Pio who said that the earth could more easily exist without the sun than without the Mass.
