Pentecost Sunday – On the Holy Ghost (Seoul 2026)

My dear Brethren,

¡°The Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things.¡± (Jn 14:26)

Let us say a few words about the Holy Ghost, His various names, His mission and His effect.

1. THE NAMES OF THE HOLY GHOST

Our Lord uses several names to speak of the Holy Ghost: Paraclete, Spirit, and Holy. Each name reveals something of His work in our souls.

First, He is called the Paraclete, that is, the Consoler. In a world filled with confusion, anxiety, and instability the Holy Ghost gives true peace. He comforts us not by removing every trial, but by drawing us closer to God. This was the strength of the Apostles. After being persecuted for the Name of Jesus, they rejoiced that they had been found worthy to suffer for Him. The Holy Ghost gave them that courage. The same Holy Ghost also consoles us after our sins. He awakens in us confidence in God¡¯s mercy and the hope of forgiveness. He lifts the soul that turns sincerely back to God.

Second, the Holy Ghost is called Spirit, because He moves hearts towards the spiritual realm.  He helps us pray. Since He is the Spirit of Truth, He teaches truth; and since He is the Spirit of the Son of God, He forms us into children of God.

Third, He is called Holy, because He sanctifies. He consecrates souls to God. Wherever the Holy Ghost dwells, He makes that soul a living temple of God.

2. THE MISSION OF THE HOLY GHOST

Our Lord speaks of: ¡°the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My Name.¡±
The Holy Ghost is ¡°sent,¡± not because He moves from one place to another, since God is everywhere, but because He begins to dwell in a new way within the soul living in grace.

The Holy Ghost proceeds from the Father and the Son. He comes with the same divine power and majesty. His mission is to sanctify souls and make them pleasing to God. He continues the salvific mission initiated by Our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. THE EFFECT OF THE HOLY GHOST

¡°The Holy Ghost, will teach you all things.¡±

God the Son came to lead mankind to God the Father. The Holy Ghost comes to lead souls faithfully to the Son.

Jesus Christ is the Eternal Truth and Wisdom of God. But the Holy Ghost opens the mind and heart to receive Christ¡¯s doctrine. Without His light, even the best sermon remains fruitless. A man may hear the truths of the Faith many times and still remain unchanged unless the Holy Ghost works interiorly in his soul.

Real conversion, real understanding, real perseverance—all come from His grace. That is why we must constantly invoke the Holy Ghost: before study, before important decisions, or before Confession.

¡°Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Thy Love.¡±

And so, my dear Brethren, let us ask today for a new outpouring of the Holy Ghost upon ourselves, upon the Church, and upon our countrymen. May He strengthen our faith, purify our hearts, and give us courage to remain faithful to Christ in the midst of current turmoil in the world and the Church.

And let us turn with confidence to the Blessed Virgin Mary, ¡°Help of Christians¡±. She who was present with the Apostles at Pentecost will also obtain for us the graces of the Holy Ghost if we ask through her intercession. Amen.
