< Passion Sunday - on Christ¡¯s Sufferings (Seoul 2026) > My dear Brethren, On this Passion Sunday, the sacred liturgy draws us into the very heart of Our Lord¡¯s redemptive sufferings. Every chant, reading, and prayer of today¡¯s Mass speaks with one voice: the innocent Lamb of God is about to be led to the slaughter. We are invited to contemplate not only the historical events of Holy Week but the eternal love that willed them for our salvation. The Introit sets the tone with the anguished cry of the Psalmist: ¡°Judge Me, O God, and distinguish My cause from the nation that is not holy: deliver Me from the unjust and deceitful man, for Thou art God, My strength¡± (Ps 42). These words were fulfilled when Pontius Pilate, having repeatedly declared Jesus innocent, nevertheless handed Him over to be crucified. In that moment, perfect justice was condemned by human injustice, and the Son of God accepted the verdict in silence so that we, the guilty, might be acquitted. The Gradual deepens the mystery: ¡°Deliver Me, O Lord, from Mine enemies: teach Me to do Thy will¡¦ Thou wilt lift Me up above them that rise up against Me¡± (Ps 142). Here we hear the voice of Christ in His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Alone, sweating blood, He faced the full weight of sin and death. Yet even in that hour of desolation, He submitted perfectly to the Father¡¯s will, teaching us that true deliverance comes not by escaping suffering but by embracing it in obedience. The Epistle from the Letter to the Hebrews proclaims the cost of our redemption: ¡°Christ, the High Priest, by His own Blood obtained eternal redemption.¡± (Heb. 9) No animal sacrifice, however pure, could atone for our sins. Only the Precious Blood of the God-Man could open the heavenly sanctuary and grant us access to the Father. The Tract recalls a lifetime of hostility: ¡°Often have they fought against Me from My youth¡¦ the wicked have wrought upon My back.¡± (Ps 128) From the murderous rage of Herod in His infancy to the unrelenting opposition of the religious leaders throughout His public ministry, the Just One was opposed at every step. In the Gospel (Jn 8:46-59), Our Lord confronts His adversaries with devastating clarity: ¡°You say that He is your God, and you have not known Him. But I know Him¡¦ and I keep His word.¡± For speaking the truth, Jesus is called a Samaritan and possessed. He will escape lapidation, but within days He will be scourged and crucified for having proclaimed -and maintained- that he was the Son of God. Finally, the Preface of the Holy Cross sums up the divine economy: ¡°Thou didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the cross, that whence death rose, thence also life might rise again, and that he [the devil] who overcame by a tree, by a tree might be overcome.¡± Christ¡¯s very instrument of shame became the throne of His glory and of our salvation. My dear Brethren, As we enter these sacred days, let us not remain distant spectators. Let us draw near to the suffering Christ, unite our own trials to His, and resolve to live by the truth that cost Him His life. For in His Passion -and the co-redemption of Our Lady- we find not only the price of our redemption but the pattern of our own discipleship. Amen. |
