7 Sorrows of Our Lady: Coredemption

My dear brethren,
Our Lady is Immaculate: this is the ancient Faith of the Church. This is based on the testimony of the Angel, that she is ¡°full of grace – ¥ê¥å¥ö¥á¥ñ¥é¥ó¥ø¥ìέ¥í¥ç kecharitomene in Greek, perfect in grace¡± (Lk. 1:28). She the perfect Virgin prophesised by Isaias (7:14), i.e. untouched by sin. And the early Church bring another proof from the type of Adam and Eve: as Christ is the New Adam, made by God¡¯s direct intervention out of the virgin earth (unsoiled earth), so is Christ, the New Adam, formed by the operation of the Holy Ghost from the Virgin Mary; but as the earth from which Adam was formed was the earth before any sin, without any sin, so is the Virgin Mary from which the New Adam is formed without sin.

Our Lady is immaculate in order to become a worthy Mother of God, mother of Jesus Who is the Son of God. But there is more to it. As our Lord Jesus Christ took our human nature in order to SAVE us, so is Our Lady Immaculate also in order to participate in the mystery of the Redemption. Indeed, if you look in the Scriptures for the word ¡°immaculate¡±, you will find that most of its use is as a requirement for the victim. In the Old Testament they offered many kinds of victims: lambs, calf, goats, etc. But the lamb to be offered must be immaculate, the calf must be immaculate, the goat must be immaculate, etc. Even in the New Testament, the only time the word ¡°immaculate¡± is used for our Lord Jesus Christ is in the epistle to the Hebrews when St Paul describes the Sacrifice of Christ: ¡°For if the blood of goats and of oxen, and the ashes of an heifer being sprinkled, sanctify such as are defiled, to the cleansing of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted (immaculate) unto God, cleanse our conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?¡± (Heb. 9:13-14). And St Peter says: ¡°you were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver, from your vain conversation of the tradition of your fathers: But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted (immaculate) and undefiled,¡± (1 Pet. 1:18-19).

If to be immaculate is first and foremost an attribute of the Victim, then the Blessed Virgin Mary is immaculate in order to be a victim with Jesus, one with Him at the foot of the Cross.

And indeed, as God gave Eve to Adam ¡°as a helper like unto him¡± (Gen. 2:18), so the new Adam alsohas a ¡°helper like to him¡±, the New Eve, the Blessed Virgin Mary, immaculate victim with Him, who participate in that mystery of Redemption.

When the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the mother of the Son of God, she offered herself as ¡°the handmaid of the Lord¡± (Lk. 1:38). She is the handmaid, the helper, not only at the beginning but throughout the life of Jesus on earth, till that last day when he hanged on the Cross. There she was, offering herself with Him.
Neither did our Lord Jesus Christ nor the Blessed Virgin need to suffer for themselves, being both absolutely sinless, immaculate. God would not be unjust to let them suffer without cause! We, sinners, are the ones who deserved to suffer! So since their sufferings cannot profit them, they profit us unto redemption, and thereby Christ becomes the Redeemer and our Lady the co-redemptrix. Since God is so generous that He does not let a simple glass of water given to a needy person unrewarded (Mt. 10:42), how much more will He recompense so many and so deep sufferings of Christ and of His mother at the foot of the Cross with innumerable graces of redemption, of forgiveness of innumerable sins, of sanctification to so many Saints! In fact, the Passion of Our Lord is over-sufficient to redeem every single human being from Adam, and if one is not redeemed it is because of our fault, and for all adults of his own personal faults. ¡°And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil¡± (Jn. 3:19).What a frightful thing to refuse the Light, to refuse the Love of our Lord Jesus Christ, the maternal love of Our Lady!
We should have a great confidence in the infinite merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in the innumerable merits of Our Lady at the foot of the Cross, entrusting ourselves to them, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart of Mary. We can entrust also all our friends, relatives, and all those who are dear to us, our country, our continent and the whole world.

There is so much evil today: there is very much need of victim souls, who also unite themselves with Jesus and Mary in their Sacrifice. When we ask ourselves in front of all these evil: what can we do to stop them? We should look at Jesus and Mary: what did THEY do? They offered themselves for our salvation. Let us therefore offer ourselves with Jesus and Mary for our salvation and the salvation of many souls. That offering of ourselves is not only the acceptation of whatever crosses and suffering God has sent or will send us, but it is also a strict effort to avoid any sin, not only mortal (which should be absolutely out of question) but even venial sin and tepidity, generously giving to our neighbour and also forgiving our neighbour.

Indeed, for our oblation to be pleasing to God, we ought – by the grace of Christ – to keep our souls as pure as possible, as immaculate as possible, at the example of the Immaculate Virgin and of the Immaculate Lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ. The more we have to make up for our own sins, the less our sufferings can profit our neighbour and friends. If we make a sacrifice on one hand, and then criticise our neighbour or judge him rashly, then what we build on one side, we destroy on the other: what is the profit to this except hard work with no result? (Eccli. 34:28)

In fact, the foot of the Cross is the safest place, where the Devil does not dare to come. There we can wash again and again our soul in the Blood of Christ: ¡°Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin¡± (Ps. 50:4). There ¡°He protects us under the shadow of His wings¡± (Ps. 16:8): as the wings are the extended arms of a bird by which he soars up in the sky, so are Christ¡¯s extended arms on the Cross by which ¡°He draws all things to Himself¡± (Jn. 12:32), to Heaven. ¡°Let us command our soul into His pierced hands¡± because he has ¡°has redeemed me, the Lord, the God of truth¡± (Ps. 30:6). There our mind should often, nay always, return and stay there in contemplation: especially during these very holy days.

Our Lady will be our great helper there: St John and the holy women, because they were devoted to her, obtained the grace to be there with her at the foot of the Cross. If we have difficulty meditating on the sufferings of Christ, let us consider what did Our Lady feel there at the foot of the Cross, when she heard the blasphemies of the Pharisees, when she saw her Son¡¯s hands being transfixed, her Son¡¯s whole body scourged, her Son¡¯s head being crowned, her Son¡¯s Heart being opened. What did she think? What did she feel? How deeply she suffered!

May Our Lady Immaculate, our Lady Co-Redemptrix help us in these very holy days to enter fully into this mystery of Redemption, dying to sin always more deeply, in order to rise unto everlasting life with our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
