On Prayer

My dear Brethren, Lent is a time of special penances; Lent is also a time of more intense prayer. The Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ is a beautiful type of contemplative prayer.

Prayer is the breathing of Christian life: as one cannot live without breathing, so one cannot live a true Christian life without prayer. Christian life is essentially a life of friendship with God, as His children: friendship searches for togetherness, and loving conversation. God is everywhere, and dwells in a special manner in the soul of those in the state of grace: ¡°If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him¡± (Jn. 14:23). Hence this togetherness with God is very easy for the soul that loves God, for the soul in which the Holy Ghost has poured His charity!

So what is prayer? Prayer is an elevation of the soul to God and a conversation with God, as St Theresa of Avila defines it – and she was an expert in prayer! An ¡°elevation¡±: this is very important. Indeed, though God is very close, being everywhere, yet by the infinite perfection of His Nature, he is the Most High, infinitely above us. So any movement towards God necessarily requires an elevation, and this requires departing from lower things. This is manifested by Mount Tabor: our Lord Jesus Christ takes his three preferred apostles and leads them away from the crowds, above all the plains, up to a high mountain, alone. The great obstacle to prayer is the love of lower things, of riches, pleasures and worldly distractions. Hence the time of Lent, in which in a special way we detach ourselves even more than usual from lower things, even from legitimate things, is an excellent time of prayer: the soul is free from these hindrances and distractions.

Conversation: so we speak to Him and He speaks to us. Often the soul starts speaking, and barely listens at first; but the more one advances in prayer and the more one listens in silence.
Thus at the beginning, speaking to God is good. This starts with vocal prayers, but should always include the interior prayer without which vocal prayer is useless (like Muslim vocal recitation of the Koran). But ¡°God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth¡± (Jn. 4:24). Hence He knows our thoughts even before we say anything. Interior prayer is the most important. What do we say? A good summary is from the four goals of the Sacrifice (which is the supreme prayer): adoration, thanksgiving, propitiation and impetration.

Adoration: in prayer we acknowledge the supreme excellence of God; we contemplate His perfections and praise Him for them. We humble ourselves before Him, acknowledging our complete dependence upon Him. We praise Him for His works. And this leads to the second, thanksgiving: we thank Him for all the goods He has created, thus manifesting His infinite Goodness; we thank Him especially for all He has done for us, not only at the natural level (in creation) but mostly at the supernatural level, for having sent His only-begotten Son to save us; we thank Him for all He has done for us in a special manner, for the grace of Baptism, for all the Masses we attended and for all the absolutions and Communions we received, for all the helps He has given us to practice virtues and avoid sin, etc. acknowledging that without Him we are nothing and could do nothing, but only failing and falling. Therefore we also make reparation (propitiation) for our past sins and the sins of others, offering the Price that Christ has paid for us on the Cross to the Father; we ask forgiveness for us and for others; we beg for conversion, especially of all those who are close to us. Impetration is precisely this: to ask for what we need in order to go to Heaven: we ask for grace, we ask for all kinds of spiritual help and also for our material needs; we should not ask for what we do not need, for useless things, but it is not only permitted but even very good to ask God for these earthly needs, thereby acknowledging that He is the source of these goods too, even though He often gives them even to those who do not ask: ¡°I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you: That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust¡± (Mt. 5:44-45).

But how can we hear Him? God does not speak as humans do: ¡°he spoke and they were made: he commanded and they were created¡± (Ps. 32:9). The very works of God speak to us about Him: ¡°For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity:¡± (Rom. 1:20). Not only His work in creation, but especially in the work of Redemption: the very sending of His Son and of the Holy Ghost really speak to us about how much God loves us! So we contemplate His works in silence, learning to see the hand of the Creator and of Redeemer in all this.

Also precisely because it is difficult for us to hear Him, He spoke to men with human words both through the prophets and through His own Son Who came down from Heaven to instruct us. Hence we can hear Him by reading the Sacred Scriptures, by hearing the Church: ¡°He that he areth you, heareth me¡± (Lk. 10:16). Hearing and meditating on these words, we are listening to God.

And then sometimes God deigns to give special graces, lights by which some truth suddenly somehow glow in a greater light and depth. We understand the importance of eternal things and the littleness of earthly ones, we understand the value of the Holy Eucharist, of the Mass, etc. Such lights are gifts of God, and somehow, God¡¯s way to speak with us. (Here we must be careful not to take such special graces as if there were ¡°private revelations¡±: the test of authenticity is precisely that these are eternal truths, which the Church had always taught, nothing new! But that truth which we had hardly appreciatedup to then, we start to understand by these special graces).

Prayer is necessary for salvation: apart from baptised children who died before the use of reason, all those who are in heaven are there because they prayed, and they would not be there if they had not prayed; all those who are in Hell are there because they did not pray (or stopped to pray) and they would not be there if they had prayed with perseverance. Our Lord guaranteed it: ¡°Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened¡± (Mt. 7:7-8). That triple repetition means the absolute certainty. Our Lord wants to give us much more than we want to receive: He insists! Why then does He want us to ask? Because prayer acknowledges that He is the giver, and prayer disposes our soul to receive: indeed in prayer we humble acknowledge our need of Him, and ¡°God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble¡± (Jac. 4:6).

The qualities of a good prayer are: attention, humility, perseverance and asking for something useful for salvation. Such prayer is somehow infallible, by the very promise of Our Lord.
Thus Lent is a special time of prayer. Some suggestion: there is a special mass for every day of Lent: it is an excellent practice to read the daily readings and prayers of these very ancient masses, to really enter into the spirit of the Church in this holy time, this time of grace. Also it is good to do the Stations of the Cross: contemplating the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most fruitful prayers. Also you can pray the psalms, prayers inspired by the Holy Ghost Himself, which took their full meaning when our Lord Jesus Christ prayed them: on His lips, they have their full value. St Augustine explained them, and applied them to Christ and to His Church, His body. And of course the Holy Rosary, with its fifteen mysteries, are an excellent way to contemplate the whole life, death and glorification of our Lord Jesus Christ.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St Joseph especially in this month of March, teach us how to pray and help us to pray! How did they pray? What was the life of prayer at Nazareth? They certainly sung the psalms together (and certainly with magnificent voices!) And they lived the psalms. Their life was a constant prayer, with Jesus in their midst.

So may our life also be a constant life of prayer, as the Church says for certain Saints: ¡°Mente in Deum constántererécta – having his minds constantly lifted up to God¡± (St John Bosco), so that we may go to Heaven. Amen.
