Adoration and Worship of the One True God


Last Sunday, we had the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. This is a beautiful feast, because there is a very special power, grace and beauty in the Name of God, and especially in the Name of Jesus.


As you know, there are Ten Commandments, and the first three concern our duties towards God. There is a special relation with each Divine Person for these first three Commandments.


The first Commandment bids us adoration and worship of the One True God, and forbids to give any adoration and worship to false gods: now adoration is due to God as Creator, and this fits the First Person, though the Father is Creator and the Son is Creator and the Holy Ghost is Creator, yet there is one Creator, Three Persons in one God.


The second Commandment bids us to respect the Name of God, indeed to worship the Name of God. Now the name of something expresses what that thing is, and no human word is sufficient to express what God is. Only the Word of God can adequately express what God is; hence the perfect Name of God is the Word of God Himself, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity! One sees how the Second Commandment refers in a special way to the Second Person of the Holy Trinity: yet we ought to worship equally the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, for the Three Person are One God.

The Third Commandment bids us to sanctify the day of the Lord, which in the New Testament is the Sunday, i.e. the first day of the week. We ought to give to God the first place in our life: this is evidently linked with the great Commandment of love: ¡°Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind(Mt. 22:37) and thus to the Holy Ghost, though – of course  - we ought to love equally the three Divine Persons!


¡°Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain! (Ex. 20:7). There is a right way to use the Name of God, and there is a wrong way.


There is indeed a good way to use the name of God: in prayer! And even above prayer, in the very Sacraments.


Indeed, we were baptised ¡°in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost¡± (Mt. 28:19). Thus the very invocation of the Name of the Most Holy Trinity sanctified our soul, washed it, and made us children of God! This is the sanctifying power of the Name of God.


Then we were confirmed also in the Name of the Holy Trinity. The bishop indeed said: ¡°I sign thee with the sign of the Cross and confirm thee with the Chrism of salvation in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.¡± Each time we went to confession, the priest absolved our sins ¡°in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost¡±! Again, we see here the sanctifying power of the invocation of the Name of the Three Divine Persons.


The very first petition of the Our Father, model of all prayers is: - may Thy Name be sanctified, hallowed¢¬ in old English¡± that means: may Thy Holy Name be acknowledged as holy, and be honoured especially by our good conduct, as Our Lord taught: ¡°So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven – ¡± (Mt. 5:16).


In all prayers, we should first ¡°glorify God¡±, and that is done first of all by praises, by singing the glory of God, by extolling His Name: ¡°Praise the Lord, ye children: praise ye the name of the Lord! Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth now and for ever –(Ps. 112:1-2).


We also use the Name of God in a good way in teaching, instructing your children, your friends and neighbours about God, about Christ, as Isaias says: ¡°Therefore glorify ye the Lord in instruction: the name of the Lord God of Israel in the islands of the sea – (Is. 24:15).


We can also use the Name of God is a good way in exhorting, for instance when we say: ¡°for the love of God, you should do this or that¡±. Thus Our Lord encourages vocations in these words: ¡°And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting – ¡± (Mt. 19:29).


We can also use the Name of God to seal important declarations and contracts: this is done in oaths and vows: an oath is the invocation of the Name of God as witness of the truth of what we say; since our secret thoughts are known to God alone, by taking Him as witness of that we truly believe what we say, we increase the solemnity of our profession of Faith. Thus St Pius X ordered all priests to swear the oath against modernism, that is, to take God as witness that they reject all the modernist errors. This oath against Modernism had done a great good, in preventing the spread of errors; it was a great damage to the Church when Paul VI took it off, and the flood of errors have devastated many souls.


 A vow is a solemn promise made to God and it includes the invocation of His Holy Name – (one should not do vows without the explicit permission of a priest and confessor, since it is a grievous matter). Vows strengthen the will in good, and can triple merits: thus the religious (months, nuns, brothers) have a triple merit for every good work they do out of obedience: the merit of the good deed itself, the merit of the virtue of obedience, and the merit of the vow, since they vowed that obedience! However, if they disobey, they have a triple sin, so one ought to be careful before making vows.


As much as the good use of the Holy Name of God, and especially the holy Name of Jesus, can be useful, so the evil use of the Name of God is a grievous sin: blasphemy or perjury (in breaking of a vow/oath). Sadly many worldly people think nothing of using the Name of God in their daily conversation – though they would almost never think to pray, yet they joke with God¡¯s name, they bring it in their anger and swear horribly. In the Old Testament, blasphemy was punished by death (Lev. 24:16) thus clearly teaching that it is a mortal sin.


Lack of respect for the Holy Name of God is particularly bad in prayer. Modernists have systematically taken away a lot of the marks of respects given to the Holy Name in the Liturgy: thus in French they no longer use the polite form ¡°Vous¡±, but the familiar form ¡°tu¡±; in English they have taken away the ancient forms ¡°Thee/Thou¡± to use the common form ¡°you¡±; this goes with the suppression of many genuflections, with communion standing and in the hands, with many other suppressions of marks of respect for God. Such suppressions are NOT GOOD at all, they are ¡°privations of a DUE good¡±, and this is the very definition of evil.


My dear brethren, we must absolutely avoid misuse of the Holy Name of God. If ever one has the bad habit of mixing the Name of God in his worldly conversation, he must take the means to eradicate such bad habit, by making immediate reparation every single time he catches himself misusing the Name of God: for instance if he noticed he has misused the Name of God, he must say immediately an Our Father, or another holy prayer in reparation. And do so each time he finds himself slipping into this sin. By doing such immediate reparation as soon as one catches oneself, one prevents ¡°full consent¡± to such abuse: the words slip through the mouth before full consent and one makes immediate reparation with intense sorrow, thus avoiding mortal sin. (Indeed for mortal sin, there is need to have not only grave matter – and blasphemy is grave matter – but also full knowledge and full consent). But if one, conscious of having misused God¡¯s Holy Name, makes no such reparation, this is equivalent to consenting fully.


We must not only avoid misusing God¡¯s Holy Name, but also the name of holy Saints and other holy things. Our Lord Jesus Christ says in the Holy Gospel: ¡°Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, Thou shalt not forswear thyself: but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord. But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God: Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king: Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil¡± (Mt. 5:33-37).


And in the matter of controlling our tongue, we should also absolutely avoid any dirty talk, and gossip, and uncharitable words, etc. It is a scandal to hear bad words in the mouth of a Christian, of a Catholic! On the contrary, their conversation should always be edifying.


Now the Holy Name of Jesus is particularly sanctifying, because Jesus is the Son of God Who came down from Heaven on earth precisely in order to save us: He is ¡°God who Saves¡± (that is the very meaning of the Hebrew name Jesus). The Angel said to St Joseph: ¡°And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS.  For  he shall save his people from their sins.¡± (Mt. 1:21).


The invocation of the Holy Name of Jesus, especially in temptation, in danger, means: ¡°Lord, save us, we perish¡± (Mt. 8:25). This Holy Name really reminds us how much God cares for us, to such a point as to send His only-begotten Son on earth to save us through His Cross!


What devotion did the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph have for the Holy Name of Jesus! Let us ask them such devotion, so that by honouring faithfully the Holy Name of God in our prayers, and most of all in our deeds by His grace, we may enjoy the vision of Jesus for ever in Heaven. Amen.
