The Highest Priest is here Christmas Midnight 2013

First of all, on behalf of all our priests, I wish to express to you our best wishes at the occasion of this beautiful feast of Christmas.  May you know, love and serve Our Blessed Lord, and His Immaculate Mother better than you have ever done!

¡°This day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord!¡±

My dear Faithful,

And the angel said to the shepherd: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying:  Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will. (Luke 2: 10-14)

Let us meditate on this angelic announcement: ¡°This day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord!¡±.  It will also be the Angels who will announce the Resurrection 33 years later:  ¡°The angel said to the women: ¡°Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.  He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid.¡±(Matthew 28:5-6)

As you know, each feast of our blessed Lord has a special grace: and the special grace of Christmas is to be saved from our sins and to become, by God¡¯s grace, children of God. To be saved from our sins¡¦  This is an expression we are familiar with.  That is the essential reason why the Word was made flesh: to save us from our sins. To break the bondage of sin, these chains which we drag with us every day, these bad habits, these weaknesses that make us fall so often: weakness of the eyes, of our temper, of our appetites, of our pride and vanity.

He came to break these bonds, to free us, or in a word which echoes another aspect of the same mystery, he came ¡°to absolve us¡±, to hear our confession and give us absolution.  Because Savior means priest, He is the First Priest, the High Priest.

The Angel could have said to the shepherd: ¡°this day, is born to you a Priest, who is Christ the Lord!¡±  Isn¡¯t a priest, a savior? One who, alone, among all other men, has the power to absolve from sin?  Remember perhaps the day we unfortunately fell into a big sin...  How miserable we felt, how our heart felt dirty, ungrateful.  After having received so many graces, there we did it again¡¦.  Think of how Peter felt after denying Our Lord three times¡¦.

And then the thought came: I must go to confession!  When is father coming? When can I go to confession? Father, please come, please hear my confession! You are the only one in the whole world who can give me God¡¯s grace!  I cannot go to a shop, to a lawyer, to a doctor for that ¡¦

I need a priest, only a priest, but a real priest!  I need a Savior!

That is Christmas!  A priest is finally available!! Finally!  ¡°I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: For, this day, a priest is here!¡± I can throw myself and ask forgiveness and obtain God¡¯s grace!  That priest is Jesus Christ Himself!  Before Christmas, one could confess directly to God, but since the Word was made flesh, since the invisible God became visible, we must go to Him, we must confess to the Savior, and, as He said: ¡°He who hears you hears Me,¡± we must confess to his priests.

And because He is calling everyone to Him, because He knows He is the Only Savior that can forgive sins, He became a little babe, so that no one would be afraid!  No one is afraid of a baby, on the contrary, a baby draws attention, draws love. That is exactly what He wants.  He wants to draw us to Himself so that we can fall on our knees and ask forgiveness for our sins and ask for His divine, saving grace. That is Christmas.

During the First World War, a young French soldier was seriously wounded and brought to the large shelter for the wounded soldiers.  As he was dying, he desperately asked the nurse for a priest: ¡°Please get me a priest!  I need a priest! Now!!¡± The nurse looked up in the big hall covered with hundreds of wounded, dying soldiers: ¡°A priest? You want a priest? There are no priests here, they are all on the battle field..¡± But another wounded soldier heard the conversation between the nurse and the young dying soldier. ¡°Nurse, he said, there is a priest here. In the other corner, on the other side of the hall, right in the corner, there is a priest. But he too is dying, hurry up if you want to see him alive.  We jumped together from the airplane and were wounded together. He is dying. Hurry up!¡±

So the nurse went to the other corner of the hall and found the priest all bandaged up, barely breathing, as he had been wounded in the chest. He was unconscious. ¡°Father!¡± she said. No reply.  ¡°Father!¡± She insisted louder.  Nothing. She shouted at His ear: ¡°Father!!  Someone needs to go to confession!¡± Father opened his eyes. ¡°Take me quick!¡± A few nurses carefully lifted him up and brought him across the hundreds of wounded to the other side of the hall and laid him near the young dying soldier. ¡°Quick, my son, confess.¡±, he whispered. The soldier was relieved, he was saved. Here was a priest.  He confessed.

Then the nurse noticed that the priest could not lift up his arm to give absolution, as it was broken, so, she gently took it and made the sign of the cross with it while the soldier was saying his act of contrition. But then she felt the hand of the priest falling, lifeless: he has just died, while giving absolution. And the soldier died at the same moment, having just recited his act of contrition.

That is Christmas. The Savior is born. The High Priest is here. Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Fr. Daniel Couture
