Our Lady Co-Redemptrix (30th. March)

¡°Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen¡± (Jn. 19:25). What have they done, to suffer so much? Isn¡¯t this unjust?

But if we look upon the Cross itself, we see an even more astonishing scene: Christ is the Immaculate Lamb, ¡°who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted unto God¡± (Heb. 9:14).

Here we have a great mystery: the Innocent who suffers. Why God would let the Innocence One suffer? Is He unjust? Not at all! On the contrary, because He is just, He would not let the innocent one suffer without giving in compensation an exceedingly great reward, viz. the salvation of the world! This is how St Augustine explains the mystery of Redemption: it is the compensation which Christ acquired for by His Passion and Death on the Cross.

Now that is true for Our Lord Jesus Christ; this is also true for the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is also perfectly innocent; so God would not let her suffer except if He would give her an exceeding reward, becoming thereby Co-Redemptrix.

Indeed if one searches the Scriptures for the use of the word ¡°immaculate¡±, one finds a surprising answer: to be immaculate is the condition required for the victim of the Sacrifice: the lamb must be immaculate, the calf, or any other animal offered in the temple must be immaculate. This is certainly in order to prefigure that the Victim of the perfect Sacrifice of Redemption, Our Lord Jesus Christ, will be the perfectly Immaculate Lamb. But this also puts the Immaculate Conception is the light of the Sacrifice-. Now the Church teaches that Our Lady is immaculate in view of the mystery if the Incarnation, in order to become a worthy receptacle for the Incarnate Word. This is true, but one should add that she is also immaculate in view of the mastery of the Redemption; she is immaculate in order to become one victim with Jesus crucified, thereby becoming Co-Redemptrix.

There is a double lesson for us: first it gives us a great confidence in the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Indeed she has a certain right that her prayers be granted: she ¡°purchased¡± us together with Christ, we belong to her! She has always done most perfectly the Will of God: her whole life was a total ¡°fiat = yes to God¡± from the Incarnation to the foot of the Cross; in returns the Good Lord does not refuse her anything she asks!

Secondly she is a great encouragement when suffering hits us. Indeed there are three crosses on Calvary: Our Lord Jesus Christ¡¯s cross, the cross of the penitent thief and the cross of the impenitent thief. There are three kinds of sufferings: the sufferings of the damned, the suffering of the penitents and the suffering of the innocents.

The suffering of the damned are those suffering that are wasted by our rebellion, because not only we deserved them by our sins, but we reject them when they come by the pride of refusing to acknowledge our sins; and some go so far as to blaspheme God for them: that does not diminish the sufferings, on the contrary. It is for them just a beginning of Hell here below. Some then commit suicide, which is the most foolish thing in the world, because they pass from an earthly suffering to an everlasting suffering. This is the ultimate consequence of rebellion against God, refusal of His Will to the end, disobedience to God. My dear brethren, let us never waste our sufferings that way!

The sufferings of the penitents are much better. See the generosity of Christ to the penitent thief. That thief acknowledged his guilt, he did an act of true contrition; then he publicly professed the Faith in Christ the King, begging for mercy – and he was ready to remain in Purgatory to the end of life (¡°Have mercy on me when thou wilt come in thy kingdom¡±, i.e. at the end of the world). But Our Lord Jesus Christ grants him immediate reward: ¡°TODAY thou shalt be with me in Paradise!¡± Then he patiently offered his sufferings with Christ on his side, until his legs were cut off, and then he went straight to paradise. Thus when we suffer, we should always accuse our own selves first: we are not innocent; our sufferings, if faithfully united with Christ¡¯s sufferings, have first an expiating value for our own sins. If in the past we have been disobedient to God, by accepting obediently the cross He sends us, we can become united with the Redeeming Sacrifice and make us for our past disobedience. The suffering of the penitent is fruitful unto the redemption of one¡¯s own soul.

Now St Thomas Aquinas teaches that God gives enough occasions of suffering in our life so that, if with docility we accept them and offer them as the ¡°sufferings of the penitent¡±, we can make up fully for the debt of our sins, and then our sufferings can start to get the value of the sufferings of the innocent. See for instance St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who had not committed a single mortal sin; she had quickly made up for her venial sins, and then the whole sufferings of her tuberculosis, when she offered herself as a victim to the merciful love of Christ, became the sufferings of an innocent, and obtained an immense shower of graces, and she became the Patron of missions.

Indeed the suffering of the innocent is exceedingly more meritorious. United with Christ¡¯s, it becomes fruitful unto the redemption of many other souls. The more innocent one is, like St Thérèse, the many more souls benefit from such sacrifice. Our Lady being perfectly innocent, without even the least venial sin, her sufferings, perfectly united with the Sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus Christ, are fruitful for all men as a co-redemption. She truly became the new Eve, true ¡°mother of the living¡± (Gen. 3:20), of those who live of the life of Christ, everlasting life: ¡°in Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of the world¡± (Jn 1:4).

Our Lord Jesus Christ spent 30 years of hidden life, 3 ¨ö years of public life, but only 3hours on the Cross; yet these three hours were the most fruitful of His whole Life, because by these three Hours of His Sacrifice, He redeemed the world. Often the last period of one¡¯s life, often a period of suffering due to age and sickness, is also – when spent in a true Christian spirit of union with Christ crucified – such period is the most fruitful of one¡¯s life, when one not only makes expiation for one¡¯s past sins, but also obtains many graces for one¡¯s family, children, grand-children, even friends, relatives and many other souls, by the faithful offering of one¡¯s sufferings united with the Sacrifice of the Cross.

When we attend Mass, let us always remember we are at the foot of the altar as if we were at the foot of the Cross: Christ offers Himself to His Father for our salvation. Let us unite ourselves with Our Lady at the foot of the Cross, accepting and offering our own sufferings as a sacrifice with Christ¡¯s, become one with Him in his Sacrifice, ¡°suffering with Him so as to be glorified with Him¡± (Rom. 8:7). May the Immaculate Virgin Co-Redemptrix help us by her powerful intercession! Amen.
