 Childhood of Padre Pio (1)

Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione on 25 May 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy, a small country town located in southern Italy. His parents were Grazio Mario Forgione (1860-1946) and Maria Giuseppa de Nunzio (1859-1929).

Already at a young age, little Francesco had mystical experiences: visions of Jesus and Mary, of his guardian angel and even of demons who did not wait he was a grown-up to torment him.

In his childhood, he also witnessed the power of prayer. One day, he accompanied his father Grazio on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Peregrine. The church was full of pilgrims. Francesco was praying when he noticed a mother who approached the altar carrying a deformed child in her arms and implored Saint Peregrine to intercede for the healing of her son.  Moved by the mother¡¯s desperate plea, Francesco would say a silent prayer of intercession for the child. The mother in a sudden fit of rage cried out loud in front of the statue of the Saint, ¡°Cure my child; if you do not want to cure him, take him, I do not want him,¡± and after saying this, she dropped the child on the altar. At that very moment the child was completely cured.

Prayer would become for Padre Pio a part of him and it is to prayer that he would ascribe all his successes.
